The Mechanical Engineering Department Student Machine Shop provides engineering students with a well-equipped, safe working environment in which those students can design and manufacture their projects for engineering classes, research, and vehicle and team competition through on-site technical guidance.
The shop provides safety training and technical guidance as well as machine operation instruction for the purpose of providing hands on experience which seeks to balance and compliment the strong theoretical education here at UC Berkeley. It serves engineering students from the ME, CEE, NE, and BioE Departments. It also supports engineering team competitions: Formula SAE, CalSol (solar powered), Super Mileage Vehicle, Human Powered Vehicle, and Civil Engineering Bridge Building teams.
The Student Machine Shop is located at 1166 Etcheverry Hall in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the north end of the University of California at Berkeley.
The Student Shop is managed and operated by Jacob Gallego, Dennis Lee, Jeff Higginbotham and Scott McCormick who between them have accumulated more than 160 years of practical work experience in industry and manufacturing.
The Student Machine Shop training program provides student instruction covering safe working skills using hand tools, operating power machine tools safely, and the general procedures operating those machine tools. The machine tools include engine lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, drill presses, off-hand grinders, belt sanders, band saws, and additional equipment used in teaching manufacturing processes, including an OMAX Water Jet, a Mori Seiki CNC Lathe, a HAAS VF-O VMC, and a FANUC Cut Wire EDM.
Upon completion of a concentrated technical training program, students who qualify are allowed to utilize the shop facility. Here, they design and manufacture their engineering projects supporting their engineering class work, research, and team competition groups.
Student machine shop training begins by signing up at the machine shop in 1166 Etcheverry Hall at the beginning of each semester, see Jacob, Dennis, Jeff, or Scott for individual sign ups.
