1)  Join me in congratulating Armin Askari, this year's winner of the Departmental Citation Award!  Armin, your work during your time in MechE has been outstanding and you're truly a credit to the department!

2)  Don't forget to check out the ME 102B Inventors Open House today! Drop on by Studio 310 in Jacobs Hall from 2 - 5 PM, and check out the projects our 102B students have been working hard on all semester.

3)  Unless you're actually graduating in Fall 2017, students who have enrolled for both ME 102A and ME 107, or students who are enrolling in ME 107 without having taken ME 102A, are going to be dropped from ME 107 this semester.  ME 102A is a prereq for the course and we will be enforcing this.  The course is completely impacted.

4)  For those of you who came to the ME Town Hall last night, thank you.  It was good to hear student feedback.  If you didn't get a chance to complete the survey and would still like to provide suggestions or share your concerns, please feel free to email or meet with me.  I will share your thoughts with the appropriate parties.

5)  A number of ME courses are being offered during the summer.  We are looking for more students to take ME 104.  If we do not hit our target in the next week or so, the course will need to be cancelled.  Please sign up if this was your intention.  Thanks!

6)  I've heard that a number of students have been given the recommendation to wait to take E27 until a later semester instead of Fall 2017.  I do not recommend this for the following two reasons:  a) If too many students do this, we will not be able to accommodate all of you who wish to take it in the spring.  We simply will not have the room capacity or lab space to handle this.  If this happens, many students will be out in the cold.  b)  If you delay this course, or start taking this course with junior or senior level courses, you will end up with course conflicts that we will not be able to do anything about because of the large number of courses we teach.

Opportunity for Cal Freshmen w/ Boeing

Celebrating a season of design innovation

You're invited! On Wednesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 4, please join us for the Jacobs Spring Design Showcase. At this open house, you can meet student designers, check out innovations in fields from health to socially engaged art, and celebrate the semester over conversation and refreshments.

Over the course of two days, students from 16 courses, along with student clubs and other makers, will share their work. With projects spanning a wide range of experience levels, academic fields, and focus areas, this lively showcase is a chance to explore the diversity of the design innovation ecosystem at Jacobs Hall and at Berkeley. All are welcome to attend: the showcase is free and open to the public.

Commissioning Explanation:

Commissioning is the process which ensures that the building systems deliver their promised performance.  Starting with the design phase and moving through the project all the way to the tenant occupancy phase, commissioning impacts building sustainability, occupant comfort and safety, energy efficiency, security and building system longevity. 


What we do:

Provide startup and commissioning services for new and existing buildings including hospitals, schools, and central utility plants. Working on behalf of the project's owner, we are responsible for ensuring that the delivered project meets the Owner's Project Requirements. Commissioning services provided include review of Owner's Project Requirements and Basis of Design documents, review of construction progress and equipment installation, design review, functional testing development and implementation, and transition of the building's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to Owner control and operation.


Intern Job Tasks may include the following:

  • Review of Mechanical Design Drawings and new construction project related documents to identify issues or concerns
  • Preparation of Commissioning documentation
  • Producing or assisting in the production of Functional Performance Tests and testing documentation 
  • Develop / Maintain commissioning checklists and testing data

About SISE

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week "boot camp" for future decision makers eager to join the sustainability and energy revolution happening around the globe. Held annually since 2011, the program boasts 300 alumni. During weekdays, SISE'ers participate in high-level talks, visit energy and sustainability sites, and network. During evenings and weekends, they work collaboratively on a research project and enjoy exploring Chicago.



In 2017, SISE will focus on transportation, specifically the concept of mobility and the the future of transportation systems. The program will engage experts and diverse ideas, covering several trends:

  • Technological Advances - the changes leading us to Autonomous Electric Vehicles

  • Emerging Mobility Trends - ridesharing/Micro-Transit and other mobility solutions

  • Infrastructure Challenges - the power grid and its interaction with electric vehicles

Participants (SISE'ers) from around the country join SISE at the University of Illinois at Chicago. SISE'ers are chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants from across the country.
