This seminar is geared toward providing career advice from the viewpoint of a mechanical engineering alumnus working in optics and laser industry for over 20 years. This seminar starts with an overview of recent boom of laser and optics industry, which is taking a center stage as key enablers of next big things, such as high-speed data communications and cloud computing (e.g., fiber-to-the-home), augmented/virtual reality (e.g. FaceID, 3D sensors), and autonomous vehicles (e.g. lidar). When optics, lasers and vision technologies are combined with Silicon Valley's IT culture, it offers a fertile ground for young talents to create a wide spectrum of transformational technologies and entrepreneurial opportunities. This seminar presents some of such examples; laser diodes for fiber optic communications I Terabit Ethernet and augmented reality, lidars for autonomous vehicles, and PICs (photonic integrated circuits) for future information technology and Internet of Things. This seminar also illustrates how mechanical engineers play a vital role in each example. Finally, the seminar concludes with practical tips and advices for candidates seeking industrial positions.
Dr. Hee Park received a M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the UC Berkeley in 1991 and 1994, respectively, in Mechanical Engineering. He has spent over 20 years in industry, 18 years of which in various companies in Silicon Valley ranging from large and mid-sized corporations to startups. His industrial experience spans from basic R&D and volume manufacturing to engineering management and business development, mostly in the field of optics, lasers and image processing, in industries including display, semiconductor, and optical communications.
