AIAA - Design, Build, Fly

Sponsored by AIAA, Cessna Aircraft Company, and Raytheon Missile Systems, this annual competition invites graduates and undergrads from across the world to design, build, and test an unmanned, electric powered, remote-controlled airplane that can complete a pre-determined set of tasks.



Bear Works is an engineering-oriented design team that competes annually in SAE's Aero-Design West Competition. We have members from a variety of engineering disciplines - mechanical, electrical, engineering physics - and we are always happy to welcome more! The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is an international, professional organization connecting Mechanical Engineers, both in the field and in academia, around the world. Here at Cal, ASME is both a pre-professional and an educational organization geared towards fostering and enriching the academic experience of M.E. students at Berkeley.


CalSTAR (Space Technologies and Rocketry)

CalSTAR, the UC Berkeley Space Technologies and Rocketry Team, is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to design, build, test, and launch rockets. Founded in Fall 2015, CalSTAR is an emerging team looking to compete in NASA's Student Launch. Our beginning plans consist of team growth and certification for launching rockets.


Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW)

Engineers for a Sustainable World is a national non-profit network of 50 collegiate chapters, all dedicated to building a better and more sustainable world. Every chapter has its own unique culture, and we're pretty proud of ours. We are a diverse mix of students from all majors and backgrounds, united by our passion for helping the environment.


Pi Tau Sigma

Space Technologies at Cal

We are a group of passionate scientists who want to push the frontier of space research and the space industry. We are not a typical engineering club that focuses on a set competition but rather we focus on making strides in innovating the space technologies.

CalSol (The UC Berkeley Solar Vehicle Team)

CalSol, the UC Berkeley Solar Vehicle Team, is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to design, build, test, and race fully solar powered vehicles. Composed of over fifty undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines, CalSol provides students with hands-on experience with real world engineering, project management, and business aptitude.


Formula SAE

We design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racecars against other colleges from around the world. The FSAE set of rules is in place to test our engineering skills and creativity. During the competition the vehicles are judged in four different categories: static inspection, engineering design, solo performance trials, and high-performance track endurance. We compete in the Formula SAE Lincoln competition in June each year in Lincoln, NE.

Human Powered Vehicle

UC Berkeley HPV is a student group that conceptualizes and manufactures innovative forms of human powered transportation. Each year, we compete in the ASME HPV competition, and members gain valuable experience in the engineering design process, business management skills, and hands-on building experience.


INSTAR Research Lab

A UC Berkeley research group designing and manufacturing a high-power, cost-effective flywheel energy storage system for improving electric and hybrid vehicle system efficiency

Autonomous Automobile Project

Location:  Hesse Hall Entrance Atrium (across the street, on campus downhill from the Pete’s Coffee in Sutardja Dai Hall)

Berkeley Emergent Space Tensegrities

Location:  230 Hesse Hall

Description:  The BEST Lab conducts research at the intersection of cutting-edge frontiers in design research, computational design, sustainability, gender equity, human-machine cognition, supervisory control,  soft robotics, sensor fusion, design research and intelligent learning systems.


Biomechanics Wetlab

Location:  2166 Etcheverry Hall

Faculty:  Professors Tony Keaveny and Grace O'Connell  |   Student in Charge:  Megan Pendleton

Description:  Our lab is focused on soft tissue biomechanics and tissue regeneration. Specifically, our goal is to understand the mechanical function of the healthy, degenerated and injured soft tissues, including the intervertebral disc and articular cartilage, in order to develop more physiologically relevant repair strategies. Injury, through herniation, or degeneration may lead to debilitating lower back pain.


Mechanical Systems Control (MSC) Lab

Location:  2103 Etcheverry Hall

Medical Polymer Group Lab

Location:  2121 Etcheverry Hall

Faculty:  Professor Lisa Pruitt   Student in Charge:  Noah Bonnheim

Description:  We work closely with faculty, surgeons, and industry scientists in order to develop biomaterials for structural function in orthopedic applications. We bring together academic, industrial and clinical perspectives to improve designs and materials used in total joint reconstruction and related devices. Our research broadly spans the device development process. Our current projects includes novel polymer development, mechanical characterization of biomaterials, bench-top testing of innovated implant and material couplings, computational simulations of in-vivo loading, damage assessment of retrievals (micro-and macro-scale), and failure analysis of medical devices.


Model Predictive Control Lab

Location:  2169 Etcheverry Hall

Faculty:  Professor Francesco Borrelli   |   Student in Charge:  Jon Gonzales

Description:  Focuses on the theoretical and real-time implementation aspects of constrained predictive model-based control. We deal with linear, nonlinear and hybrid systems in both small scale andcomplex large scale applications. Our contributions include the discovery of fundamental theoretical results, the development of novel control algorithms and their experimental validation carried out with the help of coworkers from industries and universities. We deal with a wide range of systems in the automotive field, in the process industries and in robotics, including several full scale industrial problems.
