Instruction for adding your page to the lab web pages
linked off Prof. McMains' website:
Instructions for first time use
Instructions for adding subsequent pages
Instructions for editing existing pages
Adding a webpage for the first time:
-
Make an informative new webpage that includes your name as the author at
the bottom.
-
Use ssh to log into kingkong.
-
Make sure your CVSROOT environment variable on kingkong is set to /home/cadml/testdir/cvsroot
(check by typing "echo $CVSROOT" and if is not set, add the line
"setenv CVSROOT /home/cadml/testdir/cvsroot" to your .cshrc file;
then type "source ~/.cshrc" to reread this initialization file).
-
Unless you know and prefer some other text editor, set your EDIT environment
variable to emacs (by adding the line "setenv EDIT emacs" to your
.cshrc file and typing "source ~/.cshrc" to reread this initialization
file).
-
If you don't have a public_html directory, make one (type "mkdir
~/public_html/") and set its persmissions to make it world readable
and executable (type "chmod 775 ~/public_html/").
-
Then go to your ~/public_html/ directory (type "cd ~/public_html/")
and type "cvs checkout lab_web_pages" (or "cvs update -d"
from within your ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/ directory if you have checked
it out in the past).
-
Move your webpage to your copy of the lab_web_pages/ directory, e.g. as
~/public_html/lab_web_pages/newpage.html.
-
Edit the index.html page (~/public_html/lab_web_pages/index.html) to include
a link to your new page in the bulleted list, as a relative link (e.g.
link to newpage.html, NOT to http://kingkong.me.berkeley.edu/~yourlogin/lab_web_pages/newpage.html).
-
If necessary, change the permissions on your local copy for testing (e.g.
"cd ~/public_html/lab_web_pages", "chmod ugo+rx .", "chmod
ugo+r *").
-
Test that both the edited index.html page and your new page display properly,
and that the new link works, by pointing two different browsers such as
Netscape, Mozilla, or Internet Explorer to http://kingkong.me.berkeley.edu/~yourlogin/lab_web_pages/index.html.
-
Add your new page to cvs (e.g. "cvs add newpage.html" from within
~/public_html/lab_web_pages/).
-
Commit the changes (e.g. "cvs commit" from within ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/).
When you commit, the text editor will be launched to edit the change log
file. You should type a brief description of the changes you've made at
the start of this file, then save the file and quit the text editor (with
emacs you do so by typing Ctl-x Ctl-s to save, then Ctl-x Ctl-c
to quit).
-
Send an email to Prof. McMains so that she knows to check out your changes
on her website.
Adding additional webpages once you've set
everything up the first time:
-
Use ssh to log into kingkong.
-
Go to your ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/ directory (type "cd ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/
") and type "cvs update -d" to get the latest changes.
-
Move your new webpage to your copy of the lab_web_pages/ directory, e.g.
as ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/newpage.html
-
Edit the index.html page (~/public_html/lab_web_pages/index.html) to include
a link to your new page in the bulleted list, as a relative link (e.g.
link to newpage.html, NOT to http://kingkong.me.berkeley.edu/~yourlogin/lab_web_pages/newpage.html).
-
If necessary, change the permissions on your local copy for testing (e.g.
Editing an existing webpage:
Since all the pages in the lab_web_pages directory are under cvs, you
can also update other peoples' pages. You should check with the person
who wrote the page originally before checking in changes to their pages,
however! Not only is it polite, it is smart -- what you think is an error
might just be a misunderstanding.
-
Use ssh to log into kingkong.
-
Go to your ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/ directory (type "cd ~/public_html/lab_web_pages/
") and type "cvs update -d" to get the latest changes.
-
Edit an existing webpage.
-
If necessary, change the permissions on your local copy for testing (e.g.
"cd ~/public_html/lab_web_pages", "chmod ugo+rx .", "chmod
ugo+r *").
-
Test that the edited page displays properly by pointing two different browsers
such as Netscape, Mozilla, or Internet Explorer to http://kingkong.me.berkeley.edu/~yourlogin/lab_web_pages/editedpage.html.
-
Commit the changes (e.g.
