April 29, 2016: ADD/DROP Deadline
All graduate students who wish to add/drop classes and change grading options without the Graduate Division Dean's approval must complete the form, have it signed by the Major Field Advisor, and submit it to the Student Services Office, no later than April 29, 2016 at 4:00 PM.
 
Also, if you are enrolled in ME 298/299,check your TeleBears to make sure you signed up under the correct research advisor as students signing up with the incorrect CCN can cause grade issue at the end of the semester. If this concerns you, submit the Add/Drop form so I can rectify your class schedule on TeleBears. You can find the correct CCN on schedule.berkeley.edu. 

 

May 13, 2016: Filing Deadline
If you must graduate in this Spring 2016 Semester, you must file your doctoral dissertation, MS Plan I thesis, MS Plan II report, or 5th Year Oral presentation report by May 13, 2016.
MS Plan I thesis must be submitted electronically to the Graduate Division at edegrees@berkeley.edu . Please see here the details about the filing procedure.

Thriving in Science Peer Support Groups Open Enrollment

 

Thriving in Science is a graduate student and postdoc led professional development program with the mission of supporting scientists-in-training as they encounter many of the difficulties and challenges that s/he will face throughout his/her career in scientific research. From failed experiment and getting scooped to dealing with stress and not burning out, the goal of Thriving in Science is to identify many of these problems and seek new skills to address them to become more engaged, resilient, and creative scientists.
 
We hold monthly professional development seminars with experts inside and outside of science to address these topics, and also coordinate small peer support groups. The Thriving in Science peer support groups are intended to match graduate students and postdocs in the science and engineering disciplines at similar career stages with others to create a professional and personal support network to seek and share advice. Each peer support group meets once every two weeks, for approximately an hour, to discuss current obstacles to success and potential solutions within a friendly, community-focused environment.
 
Thriving in Science is currently placing interested students and postdocs into peer support groups. To most effectively match people with groups, we ask that you complete the peer support group registration form. Please complete the registration process by Monday, March 7, 2016.

I-Coprs One-Week Course - May 2nd to 6th

Do you have a startup idea? Are you looking for a proven method to validate your idea? 

The Bay Area NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) is offering a one-week course based on Steve Blank's Lean LaunchPad. Teams that complete this course can qualify for the National I-Corps program that includes a $50,000 grant. SBIR grant applications are typically more successful, and many startups completing the program go on to further success, including funding and acquisition. Previous Bay Area regional I-Corps teams include Zephrus Biosciences, LocalWise, Labii, and Roadiy.

The one-week course, with only three classroom sessions, will focus on the Business Model Canvas, Value Propositions, and Customer Development, which are essential to de-risking your idea and achieving product-market fit. Outside of class, you'll do 20 interviews with potential customers as part of the customer discovery process.

SISE 2016: Nexus in Chicago

The University of Illinois at Chicago presents the 6th Annual
Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy
In partnership with Argonne National Laboratory; Clean Energy Trust; Institute for Sustainability & Energy at Northwestern (Northwestern University); Loyola University; UI LABS; University of Chicago; Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (Illinois Institute of Technology)

The SISE Program
The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals. From August 4-16, a diverse body of participants will engage a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability-related topics through daily presentations, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits, and networking opportunities with leading research institutions and companies in the digital technology and energy sectors. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. Graduates leave as thoughtful and informed global citizens with a firm foundation and expanded network for careers in sustainability, energy, and smart technology and infrastructure.

2016 Theme: Nexus
Water and energy have long been thought of--and addressed as--two separate issues. With the advent of systems thinking, life cycle assessment, and similar strategies for interdisciplinary analysis, the connection between water and energy has only recently been fully acknowledged. This nexus will be challenged in the coming decades as a result of 1) a growing world population, 2) the need to cultivate more food, 3) a dwindling supply of available water resources, and 4) unforeseen disasters as result of climate change. It is important for energy and sustainability-minded professionals, and all future decision makers, to become fluent in the issues surrounding the nexus, and to work together to implement innovative solutions in the decades to come.

SISE will 1) explore the relationship between energy and water with an eye towards environmental and agricultural impacts; 2) explore the the use of water, especially in energy extraction (fracking) and generation; and 3) highlight the role of the grid in energy issues, emphasizing three specific areas: smart grid, storage for the grid, and the distribution of energy. Participants will consider where the United States is to date, potential solutions, and obstacles and opportunities for each path moving forward.

Now Accepting Applications
Admission into the program is highly competitive, drawing from a national pool of applicants. Participants can expect lodging for the duration of the 2-week program. Many participants will receive partial support for travel costs.

Senior-level undergraduates (as of the fall of 2016), graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy who are living, working, or studying in the United States are eligible to apply. DEADLINE: 11:59 PM PST, April 30, 2016

Graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students, who intend to or are currently pursuing a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degree at an accredited college/university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, are encouraged to apply for these merit-based scholarships. Students must have an overall minimum 3.0 GPA and must be of Hispanic descent or demonstrate strong leadership or service within the Hispanic community.

Scholarship awards range from $500 - $10,000.

Scholarship recipients will be invited to attend the 28TH HENAAC STEM Career Conference, from October 5 – 9, 2016, in Anaheim, CA. Great Minds in STEM subsidizes over $850 in registration, travel and housing for the Scholars to attend this conference, where they will meet their sponsors, be awarded their scholarship and formally recognized as new members of the GMiS Scholars Society.

FY2016 Fulbright-Hays DDRA Fellowships: Campus Deadline is April 26, 2016


The U.S. Department of Education is now accepting applications for FY2016 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) fellowships; the campus deadline will be April 26th at noon.  DDRA fellowships provide students in modern foreign language and area studies programs with funding for overseas dissertation research; proposed projects must be 6-12 months, and will need to be completed within the October 1, 2016-March 31, 2018 period.  International students and those conducting research on Western European topics are ineligible.

Investigating Regulatory Review of Spinal Implants

Summary:

The Center for Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSI) (https://pharm.ucsf.edu/cersi ) is a collaboration between UCSF, Stanford, and the FDA focusing on research and the scientific exchange between academia and the FDA. The goal of this project is to innovate the regulatory review of spinal implants by creating an engineering registry. Under the mentorship of scientists and engineers working in the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories at FDA, you will learn about the regulatory requirements for clearance of new spinal implants, analyze data submitted by device developers, and use the information to develop the registry.
Position Information:
Full-time, summer position at the FDA in Silver Spring, MD
Start and finish dates are flexible but need a 3 month commitment
Monthly stipend ~$2,500, flight to/from Maryland, housing, and local transportation covered separately
Immersion and exposure to broad domains of expertise relevant to the medical device industry
Learn about medical device classification, evaluation of bench and clinical evidence, history of FDA recalls, market withdrawals, and reclassifications, and other aspects of regulatory science

Control System Engineer Job Opportunity at Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. (AMA)

 

The NEAR Division of AMA is seeking to add a Control Systems Engineer to their team in Santa Clara, California.

 

Job Description:
The candidate will be responsible for the development of control systems and custom electronics for use with advanced aerospace vehicles and systems.  The position will involve the development and evaluation of control algorithms, modeling and simulation codes, and operating scripts.  Responsibilities include the design, fabrication, and testing of prototype and production circuit boards and electro-mechanical interfaces.  The applicant will be responsible for selecting and integrating sensors, actuators, processors, and related electronics.  The position involves systems engineering tasks such as requirements development, trade studies, and cost, schedule, and risk assessment.  
Because the NEAR Division of AMA is a small office, the successful candidate will be expected to expand their knowledge base to take on new roles and responsibilities as the need arises.  The ability to multi-task between multiple, unrelated projects will help keep you sane.  Candidates with capabilities in proposal writing and business development support are desired.
Job duties include:
•    Development of all facets of aerospace control systems

We are seeking test preparation instructors for our GRE and SAT classes.  These are part-time positions with classes once per week on Sundays.  We seek intelligent, charismatic instructors who have both top test scores and excellent teaching skills.  Our company has a social mission to provide top caliber test preparation courses at a value price.  Team Sherwood is committed to the social responsibility of accessible test preparation courses: Everyone deserves to put their best score out there.
 
Salary: $40/hour for GRE classroom instruction; $30/hour for SAT classroom instruction.
Qualifications:
• Education: Current graduate or professional student (Ph.D. (or equivalent), Master’s, J.D.); or Completed Ph.D. (or equivalent), J.D., or Master’s degree.
• Test Scores: Top-tier test scores on one of the following: GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or SAT.
• Teaching Experience: Have taught at least one semester/quarter lecture, lab, or discussion, etc. class.  Prior university teaching experience is required.
• Quantitative and Verbal Skills: Must have BOTH excellent math and verbal/writing skills.  Sherwood Test Prep Instructors teach the entire course.
• Consistent Sunday Commitment: We seek team players who are flexible and can teach on consecutive Sundays throughout the entire year.  We only take off four weekends per year (those corresponding to): Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.  Instructors can teach from 3 to 6 hours per weekend.
