ME Professor Xiang Zhang was awarded the Nancy DeLoye Fitzroy and Roland V. Fitzroy Medal by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Zhang was honored for his "pioneering contributions in metamaterials and the creation of the first optical superlens to overcome the fundamental diffraction limit in imaging; and for the invention of plasmonic lithography technology that enabled nanoscale manufacturing, which is important for microelectronics and data storage applications."

ME Professor Hayden Taylor has been granted an Instructional Improvement Grant, which provides funds for small-scale projects to improve existing courses, develop new courses, evaluate instruction, and assess curricular needs. The grant funds also support larger innovative projects that will directly and significantly affect teaching and learning, such as developing materials for new and existing courses and developing new modes of instruction.

ME alumnus George Ban-Weiss was named on the 2014 MIT Technology Review's "35 Innovators Under 35" list. Ban-Weiss, currently a USC professor, is developing reflective roof technology to help keep urban areas cool.

ME Professors Panayiotis Papadopoulos and Tarek I. Zohdi have been appointed as Chancellor's Professors for the UC Berkeley campus. These professorships were established in 1996 by then Chancellor, and former ME Department Chair, Chang-Lin Tien to recognize faculty for "distinguished achievement of the highest level in research, teaching and service."

ME Professor Mohammad Mofrad, along with his colleagues in the Department of Bioengineering, has received a 2014-2015 Presidential Chair Fellows Curriculum Enrichment Grant. This program provides the opportunity for faculty teams to transform core areas of the undergraduate curriculum. A unique aspect of the Curriculum Enrichment Grant Program is its foundation of scholarly exchange in the form of a year-long learning community for grant recipients. Monies awarded through the program provide support and a pathway for graduate student researchers to refine and hone skills in conducting evaluation and participating in program-level curriculum dialogue.

ME Professor Francesco Borrelli has been appointed to the new Howard Penn Brown Chair in Mechanical Engineering. This new chair is to “support the career development of a gifted faculty member in ME” and is to be “held by a professor who is early in his/her career such as an assistant professor, an associate professor, or a full professor who recently received tenure.”

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics  (AIAA) will present the 2014 Thermophysics Award to ME Professor Van P. Carey at the AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition in June. The award is presented to recipients for their outstanding contributions to understanding of the behavior of liquids and gases in motion as related to needs in aeronautics and astronautics. Professor Carey’s award reads, "For seminal and sustained contributions to the field of liquid-vapor phase change thermophysics, particularly near-interface nano-scale and micro-scale phenomena, and transport in liquid-vapor systems."

ME Professor Xiang Zhang's former student, Volker Sorger, now a faculty member at George Washington University, won the AFOSR Young Investigator Research Program Award. This award is given to conduct research on nanophotonics devices with capabilities beyond classical photonics limits.
 

Shaomin Xiong, a current graduate student advised by Zhang and ME Professor David Bogy, won the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad. The award is presented by the Chinese Ministry of Education to recognize outstanding academic achievement of self-financed Ph.D. students abroad.
