ME alumnus George Ban-Weiss was named on the 2014 MIT Technology Review's "35 Innovators Under 35" list. Ban-Weiss, currently a USC professor, is developing reflective roof technology to help keep urban areas cool.

Panayiotis Papadopoulos and Tarek I. Zohdi have been appointed as Chancellor's Professors for the UC Berkeley campus. These professorships were established in 1996 by then Chancellor, and former ME Department Chair, Chang-Lin Tien to recognize faculty for "distinguished achievement of the highest level in research, teaching and service."

ME Professor Mohammad Mofrad, along with his colleagues in the Department of Bioengineering, has received a 2014-2015 Presidential Chair Fellows Curriculum Enrichment Grant. This program provides the opportunity for faculty teams to transform core areas of the undergraduate curriculum. A unique aspect of the Curriculum Enrichment Grant Program is its foundation of scholarly exchange in the form of a year-long learning community for grant recipients. Monies awarded through the program provide support and a pathway for graduate student researchers to refine and hone skills in conducting evaluation and participating in program-level curriculum dialogue.
