How to Add/Drop or Change Units/Grade Option 

As you all know, the deadline to be officially registered was Friday, December 9, 2016. From now till the end of the semester, if you wish to add or drop classes, or change your course units or grade option, you must do the following:

  1. Complete the ADD/DROP form
  2. Have it sign by your Major Field Advisor
  3. Submit it to the Student Services Office 

Please be advised that you must get the signature of the instructor as well, if you are adding a class or changing the number of unit of a class you already enrolled in.

Join The Engineering Library Student Committee

The Kresge Engineering Library is looking for two graduate student representatives for our Engineering Library Student Committee. The committee is one of seven College of Engineering Committees that seek student feedback in order to improve services. If you would like to volunteer, please send an email explaining your interest in and qualifications for the committee to lngo@berkeley.edu by Friday, September 30, 2016.

What does the committee do?

The Engineering Library Student Committee (composed of 2 graduate students and 2 undergraduate students) gathers feedback from fellow students about the Engineering Library, provides their own feedback and suggestions to the Library, and advises the Library on student opinion related to library policies, spaces, collections, websites, and digital services. In previous years, the committee successfully helped to increase Saturday hours at the library and prioritized improvements to space and services. 

What are our expectation for the committee for the next year?

The Engineering Library Student Committee will meet once a semester to discuss questions, suggestions, and feedback about the library. Committee members will help the library to publicize collections and services to undergraduate and graduate students, and to increase library outreach on CalDay. Committee members can also gather feedback from students throughout the year and forward it to the library. The expected time commitment is about 5 hours per semester.

The appointment is for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Outreach Opportunity: Help Girls Get Excited About STEM!

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) wants you! EYH plans and implements a daylong conference, which serves to introduce middle school girls to career opportunities in mathematics, science, engineering, computer science, and technology. Between 5th and 8th grade, the percentage of girls interested in STEM falls from 50% to 20%. EYH strives to provide these girls with female role models already involved in STEM careers.
 
We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic female graduate students or post-docs to join our planning committee! We have multiple committees on which you could serve: finance, logistics, food, facilities, recruitment/materials, workshops, and registration. Every member of the planning committee is equally important to a smooth, successful conference.
 
There will be a first all-committee meeting of the semester on Wednesday, September 21st from 6-8 PM in 2063 VLSB. There will be pizza! If you are interested, please email Rosemary Romero at rromero@berkeley.edu

With funding from NSF, the Graduate Division is conducting research to find out how tools developed for its Student Mentoring and Research Teams (SMART) program might work for graduate students in a variety of different mentoring situations. 

 

If you are willing to participate, you will be provided the first version of a "tool kit" containing guidance, templates for common documents, and information about further resources, that participants in the first four years of the SMART program have tested and found useful. You will be asked to respond to two brief surveys, one at the start of the semester, and one at the end.

NSE Seminar -- Self-assembled nanomaterials solving practical energy problems

Sarah Tolbert, Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science at UCLA, and Inorganic Nano researcher at our sister organization CNSI  

 

In this talk, we examine ways that solution processed nanostructured materials can be used to address issues of relevance to energy storage, harvesting, and conservation. 

We begin with work on conjugated organic materials with potential application in solar energy harvesting, and specifically explore how aqueous assembly of amphiphilic conjugated polymers and molecules can be used to create electron transfer cascades reminiscent of those found in biological photosynthetic systems. The result is a synthetic system that can create very long lived photo-generated charge carriers. 

 

We then move to nanoporous materials for electrochemical energy storage. Materials with appropriate porous architectures can be synthesized using either block-copolymer templating methods or using selective solution phase dealloying of mixed metal solid-state precursors. The resulting nanoporous materials can form the basis for high power electrochemical energy storage materials known as pseudocapacitors. In such materials, the nanoscale porosity can produce a very desirable combination of electrical connectivity, electrolyte access to the interior of the material, ample surface redox sites, and very short solid-state diffusion lengths for lithium ions. With idealized architectures, we have shown that a unique combination of high energy density and high power density can be achieved, in some cases combined with reactivity toward ions other than Li+. Related systems also show promise for chemical energy storage in the form of electrocatalytic water splitting. 

 

Finally, if time permits, we will examine how nanocrystals can be used to create very low write energy magnetic switches using voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy. Taken together, the results show how controlled nanoscale architecture has exciting potential to impact the global energy problem.

Interested in getting involved in the Green Building Industry? Opportunities are plentiful in the field of sustainable design and LEED is at its forefront.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is simply a green-rating point system, or a scorecard. The more energy efficient and sustainable a building is, the more points it will earn. To date, this course and its materials have proven to be instrumental in helping over 5000 students pass their respective exam at a 100% pass rate. This course is offered at a quarter of the price and time as the competition and is geared at allowing students to graduate with letters after their name!

 

Just as Buildings can be LEED certified, people in the sustainable construction industry can become LEED Professionals. The LEED Green Associate (GA) credential is the only entry level sustainability designation and shows employers and clients that you have certified knowledge in the green building industry.  A new LEED rating system (v4) was introduced last month and this training course is one of the few that has been updated to teach the current rating system. This course meets the exam’s eligibility requirements and the USGBC charges a $100 (reduced for students) fee for the actual exam which can be taken at any time at your nearest Prometric center.

Data Science Job Training for ME Students

This summer 2016 July 5th – August 26th in Berkeley, CA

Signal Data Science is an 8 week intensive training program that prepares students with strong quantitative skills for industry jobs as data scientists. We teach

NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) seeks to sponsor U.S. citizen and permanent resident graduate student researchers who show significant potential to contribute to NASA’s goal of creating innovative new space technologies for our Nation’s science, exploration, and economic future. This call for graduate student fellowship applications solicits applications from individuals pursuing or planning to pursue master’s (e.g., M.S.) or doctoral (e.g., Ph.D.) degrees in relevant space technology disciplines at accredited U.S. universities.
 
Selected applicants will perform research at their respective campuses and at NASA Centers. In addition to his or her faculty advisor, each Fellow will be matched with a technically relevant and community-engaged researcher who will serve as the student’s research collaborator.
 
This solicitation has two phases:
 
Phase A is the application submission by the student. All Phase A applications must be submitted electronically through NSPIRES and are due by 6 PM ET on November 3, 2016. Detailed submission instructions for applicants are provided under "Other Documents" on the NSPIRES webpage associated with the NSTRF17 solicitation. American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships & Grants Program 2017/18

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Fellowships and Grants program for the 2017/18 academic year. We appreciate you notifying qualified candidates about our program. The deadline for applications is November 1, 2016.

 

The ASF will offer around $300,000 to outstanding American students, scholars, professionals and artists for study and/or research in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. Fellowships of up to $23,000 are intended to support an academic year-long stay, and priority is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at foreign academic or research institutions. Grants of up to $5,000 are considered more suitable for shorter research visits, both on the graduate or post-doctoral level. Funding is available to candidates in all fields.

Lawrence Fellowship at LLNL, Livermore, CA - Due Date: October 1

 

The Lawrence Fellowship is a highly-competitive postdoctoral position at LLNL that is open to all technical disciplines (including: biology, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, Energy, Engineering, Materials science, geoscience, physics). Fellowships are awarded to candidates with exceptional talent, scientific track records, and potential for significant achievements. Typically, two to four fellowships are awarded each year, and the awards are for three years. Fellows are free to pursue their own research agenda under the guidance of a senior staff scientist who serves as a mentor. The fellows most often conduct their research in a collaborative, multidisciplinary manner with others in a team environment.

Application: The application is web-based and includes a CV, a project relevance statement, three letters of recommendation, and transcripts. Applications are accepted beginning in early August.
Key Selection Criteria: The statement of technical interests, letters of recommendation, and your scientific track record (publication record) are all very important. Candidates who reach the pool of finalists are invited for a two- day interview that includes a seminar about their current research work. The seminar and interview are important for demonstrating excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to successfully explain specialized topics to a broadly-based, interdisciplinary audience.
 
Related links: The statement of technical interest is a succinct research plan. Since the committee is composed of scientists from many different disciplines, the statement should be understandable to a broad technical audience but should also include enough details to satisfy experts in your field. It is important to convey why your research is important, why the work should be done at LLNL, and how you will carry out the research. Because of the committee make-up, it is recommended that you lead with your science application; it is a lot more difficult to promote research that focuses on enabling technologies. The committee is looking for candidates with a vision, a plan, and a track record that indicates that the candidate will succeed.
References should know you and your research well and be able to speak to your qualifications and achievements with specificity.
First-author publications (in fields where this is relevant) and publications in premier journals (such as Science and Nature), patents, and national (or international) awards and honors are also important to highlight.
It may be helpful to explore LLNL's publication, Science and Technology Reviews for additional information regarding current research being conducted at LLNL.
 
Process: Applications are due on October 1. The selection committee, comprised of ten voting members representing various technical organizations in the laboratory, reviews applications between October and November to select roughly six finalists from the hundreds of applications. Between mid-December and early February, selected finalists are invited to LLNL for two days of interviews and to give a seminar. Hiring decisions are made in mid-February.
 
Outcomes: At the conclusion of the fellowship, approximately 60% of the fellows secure a staff position at LLNL. The majority of those who leave obtain tenure-track positions at top-tier universities including MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley. A number of former fellows have started their own companies.

The Insight Data Science Fellows Program is an intensive, full-time, 7-week professional training program aimed at PhD students and post-docs looking to leave academia and enter a data science careers in industry (must be graduating by May 2017).

Mentors needed - Fall 2016 Session of BeAScientist STEM Outreach at Willard Middle School

STEM outreach initiative for the Berkeley Unified School District middle schools is seeking volunteers for the Fall 2016 session at Willard Middle School. This session starts next week and we still need volunteers!
 
This project, called "Be A Scientist", involves UC Berkeley STEM graduate students guiding 7th graders through the process of designing and conducting their own scientific investigation. The project, now in its third year, is funded by the Berkeley Public Schools Fund and a Chancellor's Community Partnership Grant. It has been a great success to-date with enthusiastic response from students, teachers, and volunteers. This year we are expanding from Willard and King Middle Schools to include Longfellow - so we will need a LOT of volunteers!

Benefits to volunteer mentors:

  1. Serve as STEM role models, promote scientific literacy, skills of a scientist, and passion for science
  2. Develop skills communicating science
  3. Develop skills and practical experience in education outreach
  4. Enhance your ability to get federal fellowships in which outreach is important

Volunteer mentors will:

  1. Attend a 2-hour training session
  2. Commit to attending at least one school lab period per week for the 6 weeks of the program
  3. Guide a group of 4-6 students through the process of investigating a scientific question (each student explores their own question)

 
The Fall 2016 Be A Scientist Program at Willard starts next week (Sept 22/23) and runs through October 27/28 at Willard Middle School, Berkeley
The lab periods will be on Thursday or Friday, 9:20-10:55am, 11:05-12:40 or 1:16-2:51pm.
