Special emphasis on Freshmen Programs

Technical Sessions, Workshops, Displays, Tours

The 63rd  Mid-Year Conference of the Engineering Design Graphics Division (EDGD) of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) will be held in Berkeley, 4-7 Jan 2009.  The Mid-Year Conference will also offer you a chance to meet and converse with leading engineering graphics educators at 4-year colleges, as well as with educators from 2-year colleges.  Many of the regular attendees are authors of the most popular engineering graphics textbooks on the market today.   You will have an opportunity to discuss their programs, their successes and failures, and their visions of the future.  The Mid-Year Conference has many facets that would be of direct interest to you.  First, and foremost, are the 2 days of technical sessions.  These sessions are the presentation of technical papers on the latest graphics education techniques, advances in graphics science, and the latest education and graphics products.  The Proceedings of the Meeting will be bound and distributed.  Selected papers will appear in the ASEE EDGD Engineering Design Graphics Journal.

This year, we are making plans for a greatly expanded event.  We plan to have 6 workshops on Sunday and 6 more on Wednesday.  The focus will be on applications of solid modeling after solid modeling.  Topics such as FEA, kinematic and dynamic analysis, rapid prototyping, and animation.  For this next meeting, we also plan to have a focus on Freshman Programs.

Registration…

See below for registration form..  Cut-off for early registration will be 7 December 2008.

Exhibitors…

There will be a special room dedicated to exhibits, operated in parallel with the technical sessions on Monday and Tuesday.  Manufacturers and distributors of books, hardware, and software, and other material related to this program, are invited to display their materials for perusal by the conference attendees.  Exhibitors are also invited to sponsor activities at this event.  Please contact Dennis Lieu as soon as possible.

Workshops…

There will be a series of special 2-hour workshops on Sunday, 4 January 2008 and another series (of different workshops) on Wednesday, 7 January 2008, which will be hands-on introductions to the capability and use of the latest CAD, analysis, and rapid prototyping software. All workshops will be located on the UC Berkeley campus.  Transportation will be made available.  The workshops will include material presented by:

Autodesk
Solidworks
Dimension FDM
UC Berkeley

All workshops will be offered at no cost to registered attendees of the Meeting.

Special Workshop – Wednesday, 7 January (at UC Berkeley)…
Incorporating a Spatial Visualization Curriculum at YOUR University

Spatial visualization skills are vital to many careers and in particular to STEM fields, and research has shown the spatial skills of women often lag behind those of men. This workshop will provide participants with the Spatial Visualization Curriculum used at Michigan Technological University to improve the spatial skills of engineering freshmen, particularly women. Participants will be shown how to teach the curriculum and given lecture presentation materials and a spatial visualization workbook with software that can be used in the classroom. The workshop will show participants why they should incorporate the curriculum and offer suggestions about ways to adapt it to meet their own needs. Please reserve your place at this workshop on the Workshop Registration Form.

Participation Grants…

Participation Grants are available for graduate students and new faculty from Schroff Development Corporation (SDC). Application forms can be downloaded from the link at the bottom, and should be sent to Pat Connolly connollp@purdue.edu. Deadline for grant applications is 26 September 2008. Notification of winners will be by 24 October 2008.

Tours...

Please plan to arrive in time for one or both of our tours. On Saturday, 3 January, there will be an all day tour of Sonoma and Napa county wineries. The tour cost of $120 includes transportation, all and tasting fees. Detailed information on this tour, and other tours for the companion program, can be found here. Please plan to join us.

Travel information...

If you planning to fly to the Meeting, it convenient to fly into Oakland Airport which is a bit closer to Berkeley than San Francisco Airport. At either airport, there are shuttle services available. Shuttles will cost around $20. A taxi will cost around $35. If you are driving from either SFO or OAK, take I-80 eastbound toward Berkeley and Sacramento. Exit at the University Avenue exit in Berkeley, which will take you eastbound on University Avenue, toward the University. You need to make a U-turn ASAP, because you need to head westbound on University, over the freeway, and toward the marina. Travel around 1 km, and make a right turn on Marina Blvd. The hotel will be on the left.

Welcoming Reception...

You don't want to miss this event, which is planned for Sunday, 4 January, 6-9 PM at the Berkeley Marina Doubletree Hotel. The Welcoming Reception is an excellent way to relax on a Sunday night, meet old friends and make new ones. In addition to a bar and a large variety of hot and cold hors'oeuvres, there will be live music by The Sun Kings, an excellent Beatles tribute band.
