Directions to RFS

Our laboratory is located in Bldg. 460 at the Richmond Field Station. If you are coming in the main gate, follow the main road as it curves around to the left. After making the turn, go a few hundred feet and then off to your right in the middle of a big field is a little green and grey garage, otherwise known as Bldg. 460. You can take one of the two dirt/gravel tracks leading out to the building.

If you are coming on a weeknight after 6 or a weekend then the main gate is locked. Contact one of us and we'll arrange to meet you and then enter through the cardkey access gate which is a few hundred yards to the left of the main gate.

Getting to the Main Gate

From Interstate 580 take the Bayview exit. Coming from Berkeley this is the exit after Central Ave. , coming from Richmond this is the exit after Regatta Blvd. After exiting, get to the west (bay) side of the freeway. There you will come to a 4-way stop sign where you should go north (straight thru if you came from Berkeley on 580, turn right if coming from Richmond) on the frontage rd. Follow this frontage rd. for about a 1/2 mile until you reach the sign that says University of California Richmond Field Station. Turn left then right and you'll be at the main gate where you can follow the above directions.

Getting to Interstate 580

From Berkeley: Go down University ave. (towards the bay) until it hits the freeway. Get on the freeway going northbound (it should say Richmond or Sacramento, NOT San Francisco). This freeway is an Interstate 80,580 marriage for a couple miles, so when it splits take 580 to Richmond/San Rafael, the right half of the split. Or if this route has traffic (as if often does) you can go north on Martin Luther King Blvd. until you reach Marin Ave., then turn left on Marin and take it all the way down to the freeway. This enters the freeway right where it splits so make sure you get on the onramp marked for Richmond (or 580).

Bicycling to the Site

If all other means of transportation fail, or you're just a healthy and environmentally concious person, it's a nice 20-30 minute bike ride to the RFS from campus. Here's an easy route (the variations are endless): Take Shattuck or MLK north to Solano Ave. Turn left on Solano and go down until you reach the bart tracks. Turn right on the bike trail and go up to Central Ave (~2 mi.). Turn left on central and go to Carlson which is just on the other side of San Pablo. Turn right on Carlson keep on pedaling. You'll eventually pass under Interstate 80 and then come to Bayview where you turn left to cross over Interstate 580. Once on the overpass it's just as if you took the 580 exit coming from Berkeley so follow the directions above.

From anywhere else

Get yourself a map and find a way to Interstate 580 in the vicinity of Richmond.

Shuttle Bus from Campus

There is a shuttle bus that goes from campus to the RFS hourly. It runs from about 8-5 (you should check the shuttle schedules before getting stranded), departs from the north side of the Hearst Mining Circle, and stops at many locations within the RFS.

Walking

Not recommended.
