Robert F. Sawyer, Class of 1935 Professor of Energy Emeritus and
Professor of the Graduate School has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He was among 65 new members and nine foreign associates announced by the president of NAE, Charles M. Vest.

Sawyer's citation reads:

For pioneering work in reducing energy consumption and improving the environment, and for contributions to our understanding of air pollution.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.  Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

ME Chair Albert "Al" P. Pisano sent the following statement to Bob's colleagues in the ME department:

"...I'm proud that Bob has been recognized nationally and internationally for his work, and I am sure I speak for all of us when I say, 'Congrats, Bob, Well-Deserved!' Many of you know that Bob recently completed a stint as the Director of CARB (California Air Resources Board) and so Bob is no stranger to service in the interest of society..."

The department congratulates Bob Sawyer!
