Professor Ömer Savas, has been awarded the 2003 Abe M. Zarem Educator Award. The award recognizes the faculty advisors of students who receive the Dr. Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement.
James A. Stack, ME graduate student working with Professor Savas, was selected as the winner of the 2003 Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement in Aeronautics. The judges of the AIAA Student Activities Committee found his paper, "Experimental Investigations of Rotor Vortex Wakes in Descent," to be of outstanding quality.
The
Zarem Graduate Student Awards have been established by AIAA
and Dr. Abe Zarem as a means for students pursuing advance degrees
(master's level candidates) in aeronautics and astronautics
to showcase their talent and work. It is hoped that these awards
will not only identify talented students, but also motivate/encourage
more students to seek advanced degrees in these areas and thus
start to fill a void that has worried educators for many years.
While graduate students write and present technical papers,
very seldom are they recognized for their work by their peers
and technical community outside their academic institution.
The Zarem Graduate Student Awards have been established to exist in perpetuity. The identified master's level winner in each area, aeronautics and astronautics, will receive distinctive bronze medals and a certificate as recognition of their technical excellence at the AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting (ASM). Additionally, the student will receive a travel stipend to present his/her work at the established biennial International Conference of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) or the annual International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Congresses. The technical work of the winners will also be submitted for publication in the professional media of aeronautics and astronautics, as well as announced in the media of all other professional societies. In addition to the student's award, the research advisor of the winning student is also recognized for his/her role in guiding the student.
