POLAR BEAR GOES FROM WHITE TO INFRARED: ME grad student Jessica Preciado unlocked the mystery of why polar bears appear invisible in infrared vision. Her paper on the subject recently won a prize.

ME student Jessica Preciado's paper on "Radiative Properties of Polar Bear Hair" (co-authored with B. Rubinsky, D. Otten, B. Nelson, M. Martin and R. Greif) made the national finals in the Undergraduate Student Research Paper Competition in Bioengineering and last week received an Honorable Mention at the 2002 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress in New Orleans.

See the February 3 edition of Engineering News for further details on Preciado's research.
