Sandeep Pandey, PhD 1992, receives the Ramon Magasasay award
Dr. Sandeep Pandey, who filed his PhD Dissertation in Mechanical Engineering at UCB in 1992, has been named one of five people to receive this year's Ramon Magsaysay award in the "Emergent Leadership Category" for his work "towards the upliftment of the poor and the underprivileged in India." The Ramon Magasasay award is the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
Pandey is the founder of the Non-Governmental Organisation Asha (Hope), which supports education and livelihood projects for poor children in India, particularly dalits. Other winners include a Philippine Supreme Court chief justice, a nun from Pakistan, a doctor from Myanmar, a Nepalese journalist and a South Korean Buddhist monk.
Dr. Pandey's Dissertation Committee consisted of Committee Chair George Leitmann, Committee Member Ed Laitone, Committee Member Kameshwar Poolla and Outside Member Stephen P.L. Diliberto (Math). The dissertation was filed on April 23, 1992.
