The Department Citation Award is the highest honor given to one student in each engineering department.

Eric Lew is the award winner for 2007.

Eric was born in Walnut Creek, California and attended Northgate High School. In addition to being admitted to Cal's ME department he was also awarded the Drake Scholarship. During his 4 years at Cal he earned a 3.97 GPA and 12 A+s.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Eric has been extensively involved in undergraduate research. His first research project was to build a calibration device for Professor McMains's haptic work station. Next he worked with Professor Tongue to develop a website entitled AWESOME (A Web Enabled Study of Mechanical Engineering), which aimed to explain the diverse fields of mechanical engineering to people with a variety of experience levels in engineering. Lastly, he worked with Professor O'Reilly to understand the dynamics of and develop control algorithms for a One-Wheeled Vehicle.

Eric has also been substantially involved in Cal's engineering student community. He has been involved in Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society, since the fall of 2004. He served as chair of several committees and later as president of the chapter. While chair of the industrial relations committee, he led the organization and execution of TBP's second career fair, which helped approximately 600 students (all students were invited) explore job opportunities with the 31 engineering companies that attended. During his term as president, he led TBP's 37 officer corps through one of its most active semesters ever. The chapter hosted over 50 separate events, a significant number of which served the engineering community as a whole. Eric has also been a co-instructor for Engineering 98, a seminar for incoming freshmen about succeeding in Berkeley Engineering.

Next Fall Eric will be pursuing a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Stanford University.
