Serge Granik [1964-1996], a Caltech alumnus, was, for many years, System Administrator for the Davis Etcheverry Computing Facility (DECF), a responsibility he carried out with unusual competence and conscientiousness that earned him enormous respect and gratitude from countless students, staff, and faculty of the four engineering departments DECF serves.  To honor and memorialize his life, so tragically cut short at an early age, and the work he loved, the Serge Granik Memorial Award has been established, through the generosity of his parents, Alex and Rita Granik, and numerous other contributors, from within and outside the College.

The formal statement governing the award is:

The Serge Granik Memorial Award is to be awarded annually solely on merit to an Engineering or/and Computer Science graduating senior who has overcome unusual difficulties or adversity to successfully complete the required course of studies.

The Award is administered by a committee of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, but consistent with the award statement is open to the entire College.  Nominations can be made by any faculty member in engineering, and self-nominations by graduating seniors in engineering are also invited.  There is no formal application form.  The nomination letter plus supporting documentation, either by the faculty member or student, should be sent to:  Sheila Slavin, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-1740.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 21, 2006.  The Awardee will be announced shortly thereafter.  The stipend may vary from year to year.  This year's award will be $500.
