The Chronicle of Higher Education has published 2007 rankings for its Top Research Universities Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. The index compiles institutional rankings on 375 universities that offer the Ph.D. degree.

Chronicle 2007 rankingsOut of those 375 universities, The Chronicle has ranked Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkely as number two overall. Particulary noteworthy is the fact that ME's faculty average over ten papers per faculty member per year, and that those papers are well-cited.

Faculty members can be judged on as many as five factors, depending on the most important variables in the given discipline: books published; journal publications; citations of journal articles; federal-grant dollars awarded; and honors and awards.

See The Chronicle of Higher Education for details on how the rankings were computed.
