Amnon Bar-Ilan, a recent graduate of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been honored for The Best Thesis in the North American Region by the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS).

Dr. Bar-Ilan’s thesis, entitled “The Effects of Buoyancy on Smoldering Combustion and its Transition to Flame” was conducted at the Microgravity Combustion Laboratory under the guidance of Professor Carlos Fernandez-Pello.
Dr. Bar-Ilan will present an award paper entitled “The Transition from Forward Smoldering to Flaming in Small Polyurethane Foam Samples” at the international meeting of the IAFSS this September in Beijing China, where he will accept the award.


The IAFSS was founded with the primary objective of encouraging research into the science of preventing and mitigating the adverse effects of fires and of providing a forum for presenting the results of such research.
