UC Berkeley's single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle took first place in a North American competition, with a fuel efficiency of 1,068.69 miles per gallon.

The assembly of the vehicle took a year to complete. Professor Karl Hedrick, chair of the mechanical engineering department, advised the team and several corporations contributed to the $15,000 needed to participate in the competition.

The team's year-long preparation for the big day concluded with a 3-day cross-country journey to Michigan aboard a 12-seat van, armed with a laptop DVD player to shorten the long hours of driving.
