Professor Goldsmith Awarded Honorary Degree by
the University of Patras

Werner Goldsmith, Professor of the Graduate School in Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Patras, Greece, on June 19, 2002. The degree was awarded by the Rector of the University, Dr. Zoumbos on the recommendation of the chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics, Professor S. Papaioannou, that was initiated by Professor S. Paipetis of that department, a long-time colleague. The citation accompanying the award noted the contributions that Professor Goldsmith had made to the advancement of the field of mechanics in Greece during his two sabbatical years as a Fulbright Research Fellow. These periods took place from 1974-5 at the Technical University of Athens and from 1981-2 at the University of Patras in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The ceremony was witnessed by Professor Goldsmith's wife, Mrs. Penelope Goldsmith, by his two daughters, Andrea and Remy, by his grandchildren Daniel and Nicole, and by his son-in-law Arturo. It was preceded by a large official dinner and a subsequent informal lunch in the suburbs of Patras.
