George Leitmann, Professor of the Graduate School and Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science, has been awarded Knight of the French Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur). The award is France’s highest tribute recognizing military and civil service on behalf of the French nation.

ME Professor Tarek Zohdi, along with co-editors Eugenio Oñate and Peter Wriggers, is launching a new journal, Computational Particle Mechanics, that publishes full-length original articles addressing the modeling and simulation of systems involving particles and particle methods. The goal is to enhance communication among researchers in the applied sciences who use "particles" in one form or another in their research.

The award is in recognition of a paper that was uniformly rated excellent (top 10%) by all reviewers. ME doctoral student Jessica Vechakul’s paper, A Comparison of Two Transdisciplinary Human-Centered Design Approaches for Poverty Alleviation, won the Best Presentation Award at the International Workshop on the Future of Transdisciplinary Design, held in Luxemburg, June 2013. Vechakul’s paper, co-authored by ME Professor Alice Agogino, is based on her research with the International Development Design Summit (IDDS).

Wang, whose award was based on doctoral research she conducted under ME Professors Alice Agogino and Lisa Pruitt, received a $2,000 travel grant to attend the 2013 ASEE Annual Conference.

Dr. Sochol authored Cells on Arrays of Microsprings: an Approach to Achieve Tri-Axial Control of Substrate Stiffness and Dr. Nazly Pirmoradi authored Controlled Delivery of Antiangiogenic Drug to Human Eye Tissue Using a MEMS Device.
