Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Undergraduate Advising

  1. Where do you get the Tele-Bears schedule form & Degree Check?

Pick up your Tele-Bears schedule form and Degree Check from 308 McLaughlin Hall.  Your faculty advisor cannot be able to advise you without these forms.

Who is your faculty advisor?

List is located outside the Student Services Office located at 6189 Etcheverry Hall.

  1. When do you meet your faculty advisor?

You need to meet your advisor during the designated advising time period. The advising time period will be provided to you through email and a notice placed on the bulletin board outside 6189 Etcheverry. So please make sure you sign up for a time slot on these days. Your advisor may not be able to meet with you after the designated time period in which case your registration process could be jeopardized.

  1. How do you make an appointment with your faculty advisor?

Your faculty advisor will have a sign-up sheet in front of his/her door. All faculty offices are in Etcheverry Hall. Make sure you put your name down for an appointment.

  1. What exactly is the process of advising?

You need to pick up your Tele-Bears schedule form and Degree Check from the College Student Affairs Office located in 308 McLaughlin and print your DARS report from http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu/ and bring it to the advising session.  Also, make an initial selection of courses and then discuss your selection with your faculty advisor to make sure:

a)      You will be able to manage the course contents and the course load.

b)      You take at least 2 appropriate technical courses must be taken for grade.
The number of units is higher than the minimum required (12 units if you are not working). (Note that normal progress requires 30 units of completed course work each year).

c)      Your whole curriculum is acceptable and that you are on schedule to graduate on time, i.e. you are not missing courses which would delay your graduation.

d)      You choose the right technical electives based on your interests.

e)      You get answers to questions regarding, grades, research opportunities, minors, job prospects etc.


Your faculty advisor will have your file that will contain your transcript, a Tele-bears form and your degree check. After the advising process, your faculty advisor will sign the Tele-Bears form and give you the Advisor Code. Write down the Advisor Code because this is an important number.

  1. What do you do next?

After obtaining your faculty advisor's approval:

a)      You need to immediately return the white (top) copy of the Tele-Bears form to the College of Engineering’s Student Affairs Office located at 308 McLaughlin. Failure to do so may result in the blocking of your registration.

b)      Register for courses through Tele-Bears.


Important: It is your responsibility to consult with your faculty advisor regarding the appropriateness of your program. Be sure to report any changes to your technical program to your College Student Affairs Advisor. Please check with your College Student Affairs Advisor for their current advising hours.

To ensure that you take appropriate courses and correct number of units, your College Student Affairs Advisor will monitor all confirmed class schedules during the 5th week of classes. If you have not adhered to an appropriate program, you may be subject to disciplinary action and/or may have your registration blocked.
