Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I get the documents I need for advising?
Please see http://www.me.berkeley.edu/StudentAffairs/CurrentStudents/Undergraduate/Advising/#docsneeded. The College of Engineering's page for current students is also very useful.
Who is my faculty advisor?
Please see http://www.me.berkeley.edu/StudentAffairs/CurrentStudents/Undergraduate/UgradAdvisers.pdf
When do you meet my faculty advisor?
You need to meet your advisor during the designated advising time period (Wednesday, April 4th - Tuesday, April 10th.). You may also come to Advising Day on Monday, April 2nd in lieu of meeting with your assigned faculty member.
How do you make an appointment with your faculty advisor?
Your faculty advisor will have a sign-up sheet in front of his/her door. Most faculty offices are in Etcheverry Hall but a few are Sutardja Dai Hall. Make sure you put your name down for an appointment at least 24 hours in advance to make sure that s/he will be there for the appointment.
What exactly is the process of advising?
You will need to complete all of the paperwork (your DARs report may help you do this). After spending some time on your future schedule and making a list of questions you would like to ask your advisor, make sure
- You will be able to manage the course contents and the course load.
- Your whole curriculum is acceptable and that you are on schedule to graduate on time, i.e. you are not missing courses which would delay your graduation.
- You choose the right technical electives based on your interests.
- You get answers to questions regarding, grades, research opportunities, minors, job prospects etc.
If you go to individual advising, your faculty advisor will have your file. After the advising process, your faculty advisor will give you the Advisor Code which you will need to sign up for courses.
What should I ask my Advisor?
You can ask your advisor anything related to courses, the curriculum, academic and research interests. Be sure to mention to your Advisor if any of the following apply to you
- You're a double major, or you have a minor
- You're not sure what electives to take
- You're interested in research opportunities
- You're interested in graduate school
- You want to learn more about a particular professor's research
What do you do next?
After obtaining your faculty advisor's approval:
- Double check to make sure you have met all the prequisites for the courses you have chosen.
- Double check for course conflicts.
- Make sure you've asked for/obtained written permission for any exceptions in the appropriate manner.
- Register for courses through Tele-Bears (15 units).
- Check your DARS report to make sure it accurately reflects the requirements you've fulfilled.
GRADUATING SENIORS: Please make an appointment with your College Student Affairs Advisor located 230 Bechtel Hall for a FINAL DEGREE CHECK.
