IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. The Graduate Council Policy on Appointments and Mentoring of GSIs (http://gsi/faculty/mentoring.html) mandates that all GSIs teaching for the first time on the Berkeley campus attend the GSI Teaching Conference. The Spring 2010 Teaching Conference for New GSIs which will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Dwinelle Hall. Register for the conference through http://gsi.berkeley.edu. Conference information, schedule, and registration link can be found at http://gsi.berkeley.edu/conf_wkshop/conf-spring.html.

  2. All students who are not native speakers of English and who are to be appointed as GSIs in Spring 2010 must meet the language proficiency requirements for GSIs. The GSI and Teaching Resource Center may be able to offer one more SPEAK test this fall if there is enough demand, so if need to take the SPEAK test please contact langpro@berkeley.edu immediately. If you fail the SPEAK and do not otherwise meet the language proficiency requirements you may be able to take an OPT test (depending on SPEAK or ibT score ), or pre-register for the language proficiency class, LanPro 100A, for Spring 2010. There are a limited number of spaces in the Lan Pro 100A sections, and students are encouraged to pre-enroll as early as possible. In the event that demand exceeds the number of available spaces, students will be prioritized according to test scores and how soon the department intends to appoint the student as a GSI.
