U.C. Berkeley
The University of California was chartered in 1868. Since that time, it has evolved into one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the world. The Berkeley campus of the University, with 14 Colleges and Schools, is considered its flagship campus. Each year, UC Berkeley awards over 700 PhD degrees, making Berkeley the nations leading supplier of PhDs. Included among its active researchers are 7 Nobel Prize winners. The total student enrollment at the Berkeley campus is approximately 30,000. The full time faculty numbers over 1700. Over 100 foreign countries are represented among the student population. The College of Engineering on the Berkeley campus is considered one of the best in the United States. Among its active faculty are 69 members of the National Academy of Engineering. Most of the departments in the College of Engineering, including the Department of Mechanical Engineering, are consistently ranked in the top 3 programs in the country. There are 3700 student enrolled in the College of Engineering, with 800 students majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
