INTERESTS

Applied research in the mechanics, design and operation of high speed electro-mechanical devices. Emphasis on vibration source control in magnetic circuits, stability of composite structures, and feedback control. Applications include precision spindle-motor assemblies, linear and rotary positioning systems, and robotics. Biomechanics of sports and injury.

Teaching at all levels, especially of mechanics, electro-mechanics, machine design, and graphics. Special interest in organizing a curriculum with increasing emphasis on innovation through design projects and case studies.

Classes:

E28  Graphical Communication for Engineers

E128  Advanced Engineering Design Graphics

ME 229  Design of Electro-Mechanical Devices

IBM Corporation (GPD), San Jose CA; 4/84-6/88; Advisory Engineer. Directed specification, design, and development of mechanisms and components in the head-disk-assembly (HDA) of a new product computer disk file from conception through manufacturing. Directly responsible for the design and control of high performance DC brushless motors and control of spindle and structural vibration. Design of internal recirculating gas flow system for contamination removal. Design of plastic, high stress metal and composite structures. Analysis of magnetic fluid mechanics.

Control Data Corporation/MPI (formerly ISS/Sperry Univac), Santa Clara CA; 2/82-3/84; Advisory Engineer. Directed prototype design of a 5.25" disk file, including a high speed linear "voice coil" actuator. Directly responsible for all HDA components, less heads and disks. Design and analysis of gas lubricated bearings, including negative pressure bearings, for magnetic recording. 1984 Adjunct Lecturer, Santa Clara University, "Mathematical Modelling of Engineering Systems" (new graduate course in mechanical engineering).

University of California, Berkeley CA; 1979-1982; Research Assistant, Associate. Investigation of the dynamics of the skier-ski system and the mechanism of force generation beneath the ski. Computer simulation of the skiing process for evaluation of ski designs based upon their structural and geometric properties. Study of quasi-static and impact response of ski-bindings under lab and field conditions. Instruction of classes in two and three dimensional Newtonian mechanics. 1980 Pi Tau Sigma teaching award.
