INSTRUCTIONS

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering Graduate Study Questionnaire Web Site.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to aid us in determining the faculty members that are best suited to review your application and consider you for a Graduate Student Assistantship and/or Fellowship.

When filling out the questionnaire, you will be asked to enter your top choices for a combination of a Mechanical Engineering Discipline and a Focus Area, which you would like to have as areas of study and emphasis during your graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley.

Academic Graduate Program and Research Areas

Before filling out the questionnaire, we encourage you to review a brief description of each of the disciplines and focus areas in our academic program, which can be accessed by clicking on the respectively labeled buttons on the left column.

Instructions for filling out the Questionnaire:

You can access the questionnaire form by clicking the button labeled QUESTIONNAIRE in the bottom of the left column. There are four steps to filling out the questionnaire:

Step 1 Personal Information:

You will be asked to enter your name, email address and the application ID number that was issued by the Graduate Division when you completed your on-line application.

Step 2 Selections of a Discipline and a Focus Area:

You will be asked to make one selection among the discipline options and one selection among the focus area options by clicking on the buttons in the form. Your application will be reviewed by the faculty in the discipline that you choose and by the faculty who do research in the focus area that you choose.

Please note:

  1. If you prefer to study the Mechatronics aspects of a discipline instead of selecting a focus area, you can do so by clicking the discipline of your choice, under the disciplines column, and the Mechatronics option, under the focus areas column of the questionnaire.

  2. If you do not have a focus area preference, you can choose a discipline category as your sole choice, by clicking on the NO PREFERENCE option, under the focus areas column of the questionnaire.

  3. If you wish to study Bioengineering, Manufacturing, MEMS & NANO or Ocean Engineering, but have no discipline preference, you can select one of those four focus areas and click on the NO PREFERENCE option, under the disciplines column of the questionnaire. These four focus areas are currently major fields in our department.

  4. You must select your first choice for a major field area, between the two selections that you made for a discipline and a focus area. Please note that, among the focus areas, only Bioengineering, Manufacturing, MEMS & NANO and Ocean Engineering are currently major field areas in our department.

Step 3 Selection of a Major Field:

You must select your first choice for a major field area, between the two selections that you made for a discipline and a focus area. Please note that, among the focus areas, only Bioengineering, Manufacturing, MEMS & NANO and Ocean Engineering are currently major field areas in our department.

Step 4 Questionnaire Submission:

The questionnaire will only be submitted after the Submit button is clicked and the information submitted is validated. Please note that the questionnaire will be verified after you click the submit button, and that may take a brief moment. A new window will open up in your browser to inform you that the questionnaire was verified and successfully submitted. You will also receive an automatic e-mail response from mech@me.berkeley.edu, which will contain the information that was submitted to our server. There is no need to reply to this e-mail.

If any information is missing or if the instructions regarding the selection of disciplines, focus areas and major field have been violated, the questionnaire will not be submitted and an alert window will appear to inform you that either information is missing, or an error was made.
